Runner B's Response

Read the following response from Runner B as she emails Runner A about this week end's long run. Then answer the questions at the end. Use complete sentences.

Runner B:
Hit the wall, girfriend I did!! But it's my fault. I ate half a piece of bread before taking off. Encouraging, though, is the fact that one bite of bread (which was a chore. Eating? Nauseating idea at mile 20... we went a little over) got me through it. So it was fine, but my long runs are mfing difficult man, and full of hills (good and bad). SO I felt incredibly slow, but it went fine. I didn't have the satisfying finish I did last time (when I felt like I could do a marathon with my eyes closed), even though technically I should be able to finish 26 now that I've done 20. But I felt like I would be crawling to the end (the important thing is to finish, right?). This week I will go out and buy some gu and be done with these crises...

Anyway, I'm sort of exaggerating. The wall wasn't that hard. It's just that this was the first time that I didn't feel like if I just went a little slower I would be fine. I just didn't feel like running anymore at one point, and had to take a 5-minute walking break or so, then I ran the rest of the 15 minutes without any problem. My ice bath was too short, but my feet were freezing in there... then last night I took an Aleve and today I'm fine. Today is a day off! Thanks for the encouragement.

  2. 1. According to Runner B, why did she "hit the wall"?

Runner B "hit the wall" because she ran too fast in the early miles causing her to slow down in the latter miles. Kicking ass is her style so she really couldn't help it. However, Runner B is lucky as hell to learn this lesson in a training run. Without a doubt, she will never forget this moment when hauling ass on the streets of Paris.

    2. How would Runner B characterize the nature of her long runs?
Runner B's long run is best characterized as long...because it is. 20 miles? Jeesh.

    3. Why was Runner B's ice bath too short?

Runner B's ice bath was too short because ice is freaking cold.

See #1. Plus the finishers medal is the finest piece of bling that every woman should have. Fortunately for Runner B she will be the envy of all women with the exception of Runner A and Runner F(ool).

Good job my fearless femme. You are READY!

  3. If I understand you correctly, you only had one banana for the whole run? That is exactly why you hit the wall! Girl, you need to replenish while running - a 20 mile run burns a full days worth of recommended caloric intake!

Go forth and buy your GUs!!!

  4. Laura, technically you can't get extra credit without completing ALL of the questions. But I'll let it go this time. Running Fool, you get 100% and ruin the curve for the others. Minken. You're right about wall hitting, only I didn't eat a banana, I ate a piece of bread. But, point well taken! Replenish, I will!! What's your favorite GU flavor?

  5. P.s. Usually the night before's dinner helps me get through those tough runs, but I guess this is not an option for long runs.
